Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
What is Ethnocentrism? Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s culture is better than others. This conviction of superiority often times leads to racism, prejudice and discrimination. Caucasians think that they are better than other races because of their skin color. They believe that they are superior than everyone which is not actually true because even though we are of different race, religion or sexual orientation, we have one common denominator: we all are human beings. True, we do have our first impressions and prejudices about others that seem strange or different but does this mean we should ignore and avoid them at all costs? Meeting or having a Muslim classmate is an example. People may tend to not notice him or pretend he isn’t there for fear that he might be dangerous. We should not let our prejudices rule us because this is what prevents us to communicate effectively and get to know other people and their various cultures.
